The Effectiveness of Existential Group Psychotherapy on Increasing Psychological Well-Being Mothers of Children with Cancer

Abstract

Child Cancer has several effects on all family members. Caring of children facing chronic diseases like cancer, can imposes large burden on the parents.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of existential group Psychotherapy on psychological well-being in mother of children with cancer.
This study used a quasi-experimental method in the pre-test posttest groups. Thirty parents of children with cancer were divided randomly into experimental and control groups. Both groups were assessed with Reyf psychological well-being scale , as pre-test. The experimental group received existential group Psychotherapy in 8sessions, each lasting 90 minutes (2 sessions per week), but no psychological intervention was applied to the control group. At the end of the intervention, both groups were reassessed through post-test. Data were analyzed by SPSS through analysis of covariance.
Significant differences in psychological well-being between the two groups was shown. So it can be said that existential group Psychotherapy is effective to enhance psychological well-being of mothers of children with cancer.
