The Effectiveness of Emotion-Focused Group-Therapy on Increase Social - Emotional Skills, Decreasing Depression, in bullying students

Abstract

Background and purpose: Bullying among students is a common problem with serious consequences and disappointing for the victims. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of emotion-focused group- therapy on increase social - emotional skills and decreasing depression and bullying, in the first high school bullying students. Material and Methods: This study was the kind of semi experimental pretest - posttest without follow-up session and with the control group. To collect data was used Illinois Bullying questionnaire, depressed children and adolescents (CADS), social-emotional skills (SEL) questionnaires. The population of the study consisted of all bullying students in the first high school of Bukan city in 1394-95 and the sample included 30 depressed and bully students with low socio-emotional skills that was selected by cluster sampling and then by randomly were divided into two groups of 15 experimentation and 15 control. Emotion-focused intervention, on the experimental group for 8 sessions of 2 hours was performed. After intervention the questionnaires again as Post - test carried out. Data were analyzed by use of inferential statistics Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). Finding: Group therapy based on emotion-focused therapy in the experimental group significantly (P≤ ./05) was reduced the overall score of depression and bullying and increase social - emotional skills. Conclusion: emotion-focused therapy can be effective in reducing bullying behaviors and the appropriate training for social and emotional skills.
