Effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy on cognitive emotion regulation strategies and post event processing in girl students with social anxiety

Abstract

The present research examines the effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy on cognitive emotion regulation strategies and post event processing in female students with social anxiety. The study utilized a quasi-experimental design whit pretest-posttest along whit control group methods. The population included all female students in AllameTabatabaei University dormitory in the Second semester 2015-2016. There were 24 socially anxious students identified through screening and randomly divided into two groups - experimental and control groups. In this study, Connor Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN), Garnefski Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) and Post Event Processing Questionnaire (PEPQ) were completed by both groups in four stages: pretest, midtest, posttest and follow up. The experimental group received 12 sessions of interpersonal psychotherapy. For data analysis, Split-plot ANOVA was applied. The research results indicated that interpersonal psychotherapy had a significant impact on social anxiety and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation scores. This intervention had not been effective on maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation and post-event processing. So interpersonal psychotherapy can be effective on adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies.
