A Comparative Study of Mevlana

Abstract

This study is a comparison between two thinkers’ ideas and thoughts with a considerable time interval (Mevlana in the 12th and Maslow in the 20th century);in completely different geographical locations (Mevlana"Molavi" in the land of ancient Iran; Balkh, and Maslow in America). It is obvious that the intellectual origins of their worldviews were quite different, but despite these differences, there are similarities between them. Mevlana is confident of achieving the perfect man; hence he uses the anecdotes in his book Massnavi to pave the ground for understanding and achieving the perfect man. Maslow’s purpose was also to know how the person can reach perfection; he held that reaching psychological health and perfection requires that people flourish their capabilities. At the same time, it could be said that the difference between the two views is noticeable. While Maslow calls his psychology as “the psychology of being” and talks about the presence at the present, we might say Mevlana’s psychology is a kind of “the psychology of being with God” and going beyond the realm of time.
