Abstract

Orphaned children were more susceptible to mental disorder than other children due to rearing in different developmental environments. The aim of this study was to investigate psychological profile of orphans regards to post traumatic stress disorder symptoms and performance in cognitive and emotional aspects of theory of mind. We assessed 50 orphaned children and 50 non-orphan children by the children’s impact of event scale, theory of mind test and the reading the mind in the eyes task. Logistic regression showed that intrusion experience, behavioral avoidance and difficulty in understanding false belief could significantly discriminate orphans and non-orphaned children group. In addition, there were negative association between performance in theory of mind tasks, emotion recognition and severity of three main symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder among orphans and non-orphan children. It seems post-traumatic stress disorder is one of the main mental disorder among orphaned children. Furthermore, delay in the development of cognitive and emotional aspects of theory of mind performance among orphans could influenced by post traumatic stress disorder.
